One of them, Caldwell, has been depressed and lost, in a sense, ever since losing his wife and child. By the end of the book, Caldwell comes to the realization that he truly loved his wife and son. He wasn’t necessarily deceiving himself before his realization, but he definitely wasn’t being honest with himself. The difference between the two is that, if he were deceiving himself, he would be almost consciously trying to convince himself of a fact. But by not being honest with himself, he is just not accepting his innermost feelings, which, in its own way, is a form of deceit...
